BBQ Old Fashioned

“Flavors of dark berries and complex smoke are offset by a pop of bright citrus. This unique blend is like a backyard BBQ in a glass. Kick back and enjoy!”
– Laila Grainawi
  • 2.00 oz Bourbon
  • 0.50 oz blueberry aigre-doux
  • 2 dashes lemon bitters
Garnish: bourbon barrel wood chip smoke, dehydrated brûléed lemon wheel

Bar Tools: jigger, lighter, plate, mixing beaker, bar spoon or teaspoon, julep strainer

Glass: double old fashioned

Each box includes all ingredients including garnish. Bar tools and glassware not included but can be ordered separately at checkout.

All orders for alcohol are fulfilled by Keystone Wine & Spirits.

  1. Chill Double Old Fashioned Glass by placing in fridge/freezer or by filling with ice water and setting aside for 5 minutes.
  2. Light the bourbon barrel wood chip, and place on flame resistant plate.
  3. Place Double Old Fashioned Glass on top of the plate, extinguishing the flame on the chip and          allowing the glass to fill with smoke until step 7.
  4. Measure and add all ingredients (except for garnish) to Mixing Beaker.
  5. Fill Mixing Beaker about two thirds full with fresh ice.
  6. Stir contents for about 30 seconds by using bar spoon or teaspoon. (Note: when using a bar spoon, place shaft between your index and middle finger. Insert spoon into the beaker until spoon touches bottom. Keeping your arm and fingers still, use your wrist to turn the spoon in the beaker. The spoon will spin about in your fingers on its own axis.)
  7. Flip the Double Old Fashioned Glass right side up, releasing the smoky aromas.
  8. Strain contents of Mixing Beaker using julep strainer into smoky Double Old Fashioned Glass.
  9. Garnish with a dehydrated brûléed lemon wheel.
  10. Cheers!

BBQ Old Fashioned - Fun twist on the OF

We loved the smoky element, the blueberry aigre-doux (which is great) is slightly overpowering in this version, but on the whole a nice twist on the traditional old fashioned. Cheers!

Adventurous but missed the bullseye

This drink is by no means a bad drink, its just that as adventurous as this drink is and as much as I like old fashions this drink misses the mark. I did enjoy the smoky smell to accent the drink but the blueberry hint didn’t really bring the drink to enjoyment. I was able to drink it just fine and relax with the drink but it was too strong for my wife to enjoy.

Great Summer Drink

I really liked this drink, especially the use of the smoke from the wood chip. The lemon wedge was a great and delicious garnish.

Good but not great

This is a solid cocktail, but basically tastes like a slightly sweeter, slightly smokier version of an old fashioned. It wasn’t different enough to be outstanding.

Very nice with a great presentation!

This is a good one to pull out to impress friends. The smoking wood chip, the aroma and the bright color make for an impressive display. The drink itself is nice, but nothing tremendously spectacular. It’s a nice variation on an Old Fashioned but maybe a little more lemon than I’d normally prefer. The smoke provides a subtle flavor, but that’s mostly nuance.

Excellent Summer BBQ Drink

Had it with a few friends as an after dinner cocktail when hosting a BBQ. Excellent drink even for non-cocktail drinker!

Interesting drink

Loved the process of creating smokiness for this drink, and thought the dehydrated bruleee lemon wedge garnish really took the drink up a level. Although I love blueberry, I had to use less syrup, more whiskey so the bourbon flavor wasn’t overpowered. Very creative drink!

Backyard Bourbon

My wife and I enjoyed the combination of flavors in this cocktail, but it really just made me want to eat!!

I loved the Smokey flavor. And the whiskey was top notch!

Smokey flavor

I was intrigued with the prospect of having a “barbecue in a glass” and so decided to give this a try. I wasn’t able to get the wood pieces to do much more than smolder before the fire went out, but did manage to get enough smoke to impart the wood flavor to the drink. I tried the drink with and without, and the wood definitely added another layer of complexity and improved the drink. I was surprised at how well the blueberry aigret-doux gave the drink a bit of sweetness but not too much, like a good BBQ sauce. Overall, a highly enjoyable drink, even with the wood chip issue. I think this delivered and this would be on my list all summer if I could get a steady supply of aigret-doux.

Great take on a classic

I rally enjoyed his Old Fashioned. The smokiness and the sweet went very well together. It was super easy but my husband liked that I smoked the wood chip to give the glass the smokiness. I will keep this recipe for the future!
